The 2nd Annual Statesman Journal Mid-Valley Sports Awards proved to be a banner night for the Saxons Kaitlyn Paluska as she was named the 2017 Scholar Athlete of the Year.  The award, announced at the very end of the evening and the only money-bearing prize, earned Kaitlyn a $5,000 scholarship.  The award was sponsored by BI-MART and handed out by two-time Olympic Soccer Gold-Medalist Mia Hamm and former Oregon Duck and NFL Quarterback, Joey Harrington.

Paluska, who served as varsity team captain in soccer and tennis, earned 8 varsity awards in three different sports while at South Salem.  She was named to the Greater Valley Conference Soccer First Team in 2016 and 2017 and made it to the conference quarterfinals two years in a row in tennis.  Through her four years, Kaitlyn carried a 4.0 GPA and graduated 1st in her class.  She plans to attend Linfield College where she’ll study Nursing.

Kaitlyn joined three other Saxon tennis players and five other Saxon athletes nominated for an award.  Selbie Christensen (junior) was nominated as the Volleyball Player of the Year and Jillian and Loryn Studer (seniors) earned their second nomination as the Tennis Players of the Year.  The Studers won last year as juniors and lost this year to West Salem’s Anya Gerasimova.
