Greater Valley Conference Play

Saxons (OSAA #6) 1 – 1 McMinnville Grizzlies (OSAA #2)

BENNETT FIELD: It was our best game of the year (so far). Prior to the match last night (as noted by coach Tom Jaeger) McMinnville had scored three or more goals in every game, and we had allowed no more than two goals in in every game. So, something had to give. Fortunately, our defense held strong while their attack faltered. Truth be told, they did not score at all last night. We started and played well. It was high intensity, back and forth. We had an early call for a PK denied by the official. We had a couple of good chances; so did they. Anthony made a fantastic point-blank foot save late in the half. Finally, with about 30 seconds remaining, the Grizzlies scored off a corner. The ball actually deflected off two Saxons into the goal for an own goal. Hence, the Grizzlies did not score at all last night. It was bad luck, not bad defense. We started the second half well, had the first two shots of the second half, and had another legitimate PK waved off. At about 14 minutes in, Mikey was sent off on a questionable red card. One goal down and one man down, the Saxons responded remarkably. Within three minutes, although the Grizzlies had managed their first shot of the half, the Saxons had taken two more shots, and had scored. Sebastian was taken down in the box, and this time the ref could not ignore it. Armando showed nerves of steel stepping up and finishing the resulting PK. For the next 23 minutes, the Saxons held on for the win. During that time, the Grizzlies got off seven shots to none for the Saxons. Saul was up to the task and late in the half, he made a terrific double-save to preserve the second half shout out. It wasn’t like we parked the bus (or two busses). We actually played quite well for being a man down against allegedly the second best team in the state. Sometimes a tie feels like a win. This was one of those occasions.

It’s hard to pick a Man of the match for this one. It could be Sebastian for drawing the PK and relentlessly attacking all night. It could be Armando for finishing the PK under pressure. It could be Mikey for a great job at attacking center mid (until the red card). If could be Bastida for a great job winning balls and creating chances up top. It could be Leo or Isai for solid play in midfield on both sides of the ball. It could be the backs (Sam, Diego RS, Airan and Mateo), for shutting down McMinville’s prolific attack (58 goals through 12 games). It could be Anthony or Saul for each making top shelf saves to preserve the result. It’s too hard to pick. They were all man of the match.
