South Salem 8, Post Falls (ID) 4.

South Salem is 1-3. Post Falls is 2-3.

The Saxons battled back from a 4-0 deficit to beat Post Falls 8-4 in their final game of the Bucks Bag Tournament in Boise, Idaho.

Ryan Brown started strong on the bump for South Salem, but hit a snag in the bottom of the third when Post Falls plated four runs on 2 hits, 3 walks, and 2 errors.

South looked to answer back in the top of the fourth. Aaron Zavala singled with 2 outs, followed by Brown drawing a walk. Tori Doten then hit an RBI single to center, scoring Zavala and cutting the lead down to 4-1.

Elijah Enomoto-Haole took over on the mound for South Salem in the bottom half of the fourth. He went on to pitch four scoreless innings to give the Saxons a chance at the comeback.

In the top of the 5th, the Saxons looked to be in trouble after the first two batters flew out. But once again with 2 outs, the Saxon bats refused to cave in. Beau Smith drew the 2-out walk to get things started. Sean Alvarado followed with an 8-pitch walk. Collin Vogt then hit a hard sinking line drive to right, which was misplayed by the Post Falls right fielder, allowing one run to score. Zavala then singled to short left-center, scoring Alvarado and sending Vogt to third. Heads up baserunning by Zavala allowed him to take second on the throw home. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Ryan Brown stepped to the plate and lined a one-hopper to the left fielder, scoring Vogt easily. Zavala came around to score on the hit as well, but required an impressive slide around the diving catcher’s tag attempt. In all, South Salem scored 4 runs on 2 walks, 1 error, and 2 hits to take the lead, 5-4.

Post Falls went down quietly in the final two frames, as South Salem picked up its first win of the 2017 season.

Zavala led the offensive charge, going 3-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Brown was effective on the mound, surrendering just one earned run through 3 innings. Enomoto-Haole picked up the win in relief, pitching 4 scoreless while allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk.

South Salem now travels home to Salem to prepare for Tuesday’s league and home opener against West Albany. Hope to see you all there!
