In the final game of the series, West Albany used an impressive pitching performance from Curtis Zamora to pick up a 3-0 victory and a 1-1 series tie.

With 2 outs and nobody on to start the game, Aaron Zavala drew a walk. During Ryan Brown’s ensuing plate appearance, Zavala advanced to third after a couple of wild pitches. Brown eventually walked, but the inning ended when Zamora got Tori Doten to ground into a fielder’s choice.

The Saxons wouldn’t reach base again until the top of the fourth inning, when Zavala drew his second walk of the game, but Zamora made quick work of the rest of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Evan Cyrus doubled to deep left field to lead off the inning. After a strikeout, Jacob Miller laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw to first went just a bit up the line and ricocheted off Miller as he approached the bag, allowing Cyrus to score from second. Zavala limited the damage, though, getting a groundout and strikeout to end the inning.

With a 1-0 lead, Zamora got back to work, sending South Salem down in order in the 5th.

Tori Doten took over on the mound in the bottom of the inning, getting a couple of quick outs. Then Zamora, Jordan Luttrell, and Cyrus drew back-to-back-to-back walks to load the bases. Bennett Markley then hit a soft liner to left field, scoring two runs to extend West Albany’s lead to 3-0. Doten limited the damage by striking out Miller to end the inning.

Zamora again sent the Saxons down in order in the 6th, keeping his no-hitter intact.

In the bottom of the 6th, Doten allowed a 1-out walk to Riley Kerr. One out later, Jayce Lien drove a ball to the right-center gap that looked like a sure hit, but right fielder Kyle Martz made an incredible diving snag to end the inning.

On the first pitch of the 7th inning, Zamora’s no-hitter ended when Zavala crushed a line drive to left field. Zavala later stole second. Brown then hit a grounder to third, but the throw to first was off line, allowing Zavala to advance to third and Brown to second. The Saxons then had three at-bats with the tying run at the dish, but popped out and struck out twice to end the game.

Zamora finished with a complete game shutout, striking out 11, allowing just one hit.

South Salem next opens a 2-game series against McKay on Friday at Gilmore. Hope to see you there!
