South Salem is 7-2 (9-5). West Salem is 4-5 (7-11).

The Saxons took the seasons series over West Salem with a 7-4 victory on a showery Monday evening.

South Salem got a couple of 1-out singles from Tori Doten and Aaron Zavala in the top of the first, but were unable to score. In the bottom of the first, Jaden Perez singled off of Ryan Brown to start the West Salem offense. A couple of pitches later, he was caught stealing by Aaron Zavala for the first out. Grant Theis and Anthony Zellner both grounded out to Tori to end the inning, including an incredible diving play deep in the hole at short.

After trading zeroes in the second, the Saxons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third. After a groundout, Sean Alvarado was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Tori Doten groundout. The Titans then intentionally walked Zavala. With Brown at the plate, the West Salem catcher had Zavala picked off of first, but his throw sailed into right field, allowing Alvarado to score. A strikeout ended the frame.

West Salem threatened in the bottom of the third. Logan Johnson singled to lead things off, but Jacob Denning grounded into a 1-6-3 double play. With 2 outs, Perez doubled to deep left before Brown induced a Theis groundout to end the inning.

After a flyout to open the fourth, Kaiden Doten walked. Elijah Enomoto-Haole then singled to short right. After a popout for the 2nd out, Collin Vogt drew a walk to load the bases. Austin Ailstock went on to walk Alvarado and Tori, advancing South Salem’s lead to 3-0. A groundout ended the inning.

In the bottom half, Brown pitched his way out of a big jam. With 1 out, Ross McConnell walked. Brenton Reddy and Black Buccheit followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Brown struckout Blake Arritola for the second out. Johnson and Brown then locked into a duel. With a 3-2 count, Johnson fouled off four consecutive fastballs before Brown broke off a curveball for strike three, stranding the bases loaded and preserving the 3-0 lead.

Brown led off the Saxons’ offense with a walk in the fifth; Fredinburg reached on an error. After consecutive flyouts, Kyle Martz beat out a grounder to the shortstop to load the bases. Vogt then walked to plate a run and was followed by an RBI single for Alvarado to move South’s lead to 6-0.

The Titans finally got to Brown in the bottom of the fifth. Denning singled, Perez walked, and Theis singled to load the bases. Everyone advanced on a wild pitch, making it 6-1. After a strikeout, McConnell then brought home two runs with a single. Reddy followed with a single of his own. Enomoto-Haole then relieved Brown. After walking the first batter he faced, West Salem brought home their 4th run of the inning on a sacrifice fly. A balk allowed both runners to advance. Johnson then crushed a flyball to deep left field, but Alvarado made a diving catch to end the inning.

Both teams traded zeroes in the 6th before the Saxons added one in the 7th. With 1 out, Vogt was hit by a pitch and Alvarado walked. After a popout for the 2nd out, Zavala doubled to bring home Vogt. West Salem intentionally walked Brown, and earned a strikeout to send the game to the final frame.

After hitting Zellner to start the bottom of the 7th, Enomoto-Haole shut the door, striking out McConnel and Reddy before inducing a Buccheit groundout to end the game.

7 different Saxons scored a run en route to the 7-4 victory.
