South Salem is 8-2 (10-5). North Salem is 4-7 (5-12).

The Vikings took the early lead on a rainy evening at Gilmore. With 1 out, Will Tsukamaki was hit by a pitch. Cameron Kallhoff then reached on an error, allowing Tsukamaki to advance to third. On the next pitch, Nick Raska doubled to deep left field, scoring Tsukamaki. But Sean Alvarado made a quick grab and fired the ball in to Elijah Enomoto-Haole at third, who laid down the tag on Kallhoff for the second out. After Zach Goodwin walked, Fredinburg struckout Jake Mason looking to end the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, Tori Doten reached on a 1-out error, but was picked off by Raska at first. Aaron Zavala then crushed a double to deep right center field. He later stole third but was left stranded when Ryan Brown struckout to end the inning.

Travis Burger walked to start the 2nd for North Salem. Fredinburg dug deep to strike out Dylan Ebbs and Hunter Sullivan before Aaron Zavala threw Burger out attempting to steal second.

In the bottom of the second, the Saxons offense exploded for 6 runs. Fredinburg and Kaiden Doten started things off with back-to-back singles. Enomoto-Haole laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. With Beau Smith at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Fredinburg to score and Doten to move up to 3rd. Smith then hit an RBI double to left. Collin Vogt followed with a single to advance Smith and advanced to second on the outfielder’s throw in. Sean Alvarado brought both runners home with a single to center, making it 4-1 South Salem. After an infield fly for the second out of the inning, Zavala hammered his second double of the night, scoring Alvarado. Brown followed with an RBI double of his own, and the Saxons held a 6-1 lead.

After trading zeroes in the 3rd and Fredinburg sending the Vikings down in order in the top of the 4th, the Saxons tacked on 3 runs. Vogt led off with a double, followed by an Alvarado walk. Vogt later scored on a wild pitch. Tori Doten then singled to left, but Mason gunned Alvarado down at home for the first out of the inning. Doten moved up to second on the play. With first base open, North Salem intentionally walked Zavala. But Brown made them pay, hitting his second double of the day en route to driving in Doten and Zavala to advance South’s lead to 9-1. The Vikings made a pitching change, bringing in Goodwin, who shut down the Saxons and kept Brown stranded on the bases.

The Vikings threatened in the 5th with a couple of singles, but Fredinburg worked out of trouble.

Pinch hitter Chase Wilson led off the bottom of the 5th by reaching on a dropped third strike. Vogt and Alvarado reached on walks to load the bases, and Tori Doten ended the game with a 2 RBI single to left.

South Salem heads to Schaefer Stadium Wednesday for game two of the series. Hope to see you there!
