The McMinnville Grizzlies clinched the Greater Valley Conference championship with a walk-off single Wednesday night to cap off a well-played game of baseball.

In the bottom of the second, Tyler Sitton and Sam DuPuis drew back-to-back walks to start the frame. They advanced on a throwing error on an attempted pickoff. Kevin Sullivan followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Sitton for the first run of the ballgame.

The score remained 1-0 throughout the next three innings as Sean Alvarado and Wyatt Smith locked into a pitcher’s duel.

With 2 outs in the top of the 6th, Tori Doten pulled a single to left field to put Smith’s no-hitter to bed. Doten then stole second, but with a 2-0 count to Aaron Zavala, the Grizzlies chose to intentionally walk him and instead face Ryan Brown. Brown worked a full count, and with both runners going on the pitch, lined a single to left field to score Doten and move Zavala to third. Brown stole second, but the inning ended on a lineout to center field.

With the score knotted at one run a piece, Sitton led off the bottom of the 6th with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A DuPuis sacrifice bunt then moved Sitton to third with only one out. Brett Lundeen entered as a pinch-hitter, only to draw a walk before Sullivan re-entered for him to run at first base. After a soft lineout to Fredinburg for the second out of the inning, Alvarado picked DuPuis off first base to end the scoring threat and send the 1-1 tie into the 7th inning.

Elijah Enomoto-Haole singled with 1-out to right field, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the top half.

In the bottom of the 7th, Zavala took over on the mound for the Saxons. Josh Ford led off with a single, and moved up to second on Brad Hessel’s sac bunt. With first base open, South Salem opted to intentionally walk Smith to set up the double-play opportunity. Cedric Agcaoilio-Ostrom flew out to Alvarado in left field for the second out of the inning. Designated hitter Nathan Leid stepped to the plate and, on a 1-0 count, hit a single off the end of the bat into center field, scoring Ford and making the Grizzlies the outright 2017 GVC champions.

South Salem hosts McMinnville at Gilmore on Thursday. First pitch at 5:00pm. If South Salem wins, the Saxons will finish in 3rd place and get an automatic playoff berth.
