South Salem is 11-5 (14-9). Lincoln is 15-2 (18-8).

In the second of three tuneup games before playoffs start next week, the Saxons picked up a 7-6 victory over the PIL Champion Lincoln Cardinals at George Fox University.

The Saxons jumped on the board early, scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the first. Sean Alvarado led off with a single to left and moved up on Tori Doten’s bunt before Aaron Zavala drove a 2-2 fastball off the right-center field wall for an RBI triple. Zavala scored 2 pitches later, when Ryan Brown grounded out to third base.

The teams traded zeroes in the second. In the top of the third, Jake Leitgeb singled to lead off the inning. Matt Easton later drilled a line drive directly to right fielder Kyle Martz, who made the catch and fired to first in an attempt to double off the runner, but his throw went wide of first base and rolled into the dugout. The umpires awarded Leitgeb third base, and he came in to score on Gabe Skoro’s sacrifice fly to left. With the bases empty, Brandon Leitgeb hit a homerun to left, tying the game at two apiece.

The Saxons answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. With 1 out, Alvarado reached on an error by the third baseman. Tori Doten followed with a walk, and Zavala cleared the bags with a 2-run double to right field. Starting pitcher Jon Fortner then struggled to find the strike zone, walking Brown and Fredinburg to load the bases and then Beau Smith to bring home a run. Kyle Martz entered the game to run for Smith. After a Kaiden Doten flyout, Elijah Enomoto-Haole walked to plate South Salem’s fourth run of the inning. A strikeout ended the frame, but the Saxons led 6-2.

The Cardinals loaded the bases in the fourth on a 1-out double and back-to-back walks, but Alvarado got a lineout and strikeout to end the frame.

Lincoln plated 2 runs in the top of the 5th on two hits, a walk, and a fielder’s choice.

In the top of the 6th, Fredinburg took over on the mound. Bennett Sacker started the inning with a single, and moved up on Jake Leitgeb’s walk. Bradley Emmens then pinch-ran for Leitgeb. After a flyout, Sacker and Emmens moved up on a double steal. Skoro then singled to center to score both runners and tie the game at six. Brandon Leitgeb followed with a double to advance Skoro to third. With 1 out and the infield in, Baxter Halligan hit a hard grounder to Brown at third, who threw home to nab Skoro attempting to score. A groundout to Tori Doten ended the half inning.

The Saxons plated what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the frame. Collin Vogt drew a 1-out walk and advanced to second on an Alvarado single. After a flyout for the second out of the inning, Lincoln opted to intentionally walk Zavala to load the bases for Ryan Brown, who made them pay with an RBI line drive single to right. Vogt scored, but Alvarado was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Myles Parkel was hit by a pitch to start the 7th for Lincoln. With the sacrifice bunt on, Zach Ross took two consecutive balls. The Cardinals then put on a hit-and-run. With Parkel running for second, second baseman Tori Doten broke for the bag – Ross wound up hitting a two hopper directly to Doten, who stepped on second and fired to his brother at first for the 4-3 double play. A flyout to Martz in right ended the inning, and the game.

The Saxons next travel to Crescent Valley on Thursday to face the Mid-Willamette Conference champions for their final tune-up game before Monday’s first round home playoff game against Roseburg.
