The South Women’s Tennis Team finished the week strong with a 6-2 upset against Forest Grove Tonight at Salem Tennis and Swim Club. The win completes a two-match upset after the Saxons topped McMinnville on Tuesday. Senior Jessa Miller returned from injury to play in the first doubles slot with partner Jillian Studer. Studer’s sister and partner, Loryn, was out due to illness. In their first match playing as partners, the Miller/Studer tandem beat their Forest Grove opponents in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
The Saxons also received wins from seniors Chandler Wren and Megan Edelblute (7-6, 6-4). The duo was pressed late into games but rallied to get the win. Junior Kaitlyn Paluska and senior Karli Scoggins added their 6th victory of the season, defeating their opponents 6-0, 7-6. In the final doubles match of the night, junior Sara Komoda and senior Sophia Bashey lost a heartbreaker in their 3rd set.
On the singles side, senior Arianna Burtis and her opponent were able to finish their first set before the Forest Grove player had to withdraw due to medical reasons. The Saxons picked up big wins from junior Olivia Webster (7-6, 6-4) and Mariana Rey-Rosa (7-5, 1-6, 6-4) despite hurting her ankle mid-match. Senior Alison Brown lost a tough match (5-7, 0-6) as well.
The win gave the Saxons the 3rd place position heading into the district tournament next week. District Matches will be held in McMinnville on Thursday (starting at 1:00PM) and Friday (starting at 9AM) and at Salem Tennis and Swim Club on Saturday (starting at 9:00AM).
