The clouds parted and the Saxon Women’s Tennis team took the court for the first time this season today at Bush Park. Hosting McMinnville, five of South’s varsity matches ended in victory as Abby Fedor (9) and Amy Edelblute (10) both won their first high school career matches. Fedor topped the Grizzlies Avari Bristow (11) 6-1, 6-3 while Edelblute went 6-2, 7-5 against Rochelle Schoenthal (12) in the decisive final match of the day. The Saxons also received strong performances from senior Sara Komoda (4-6, 1-6 v. Amy Gilliat) and Madison Hadden (4-6, 1-6 v. Zelmira Stevens).
On the Doubles side, GVC runners-up and Statesman Journal Spring Sport Athlete of the Year winners Jillian and Loryn Studer (12) got off to a great start winning 6-1, 6-3 against Lily Elmer (12) and Annelin Stephens (12). In the 2nd doubles slot, senior Kate Paluska partnered with junior Selbie Christensen to win their match 6-3, 6-0 against Cara Gaffney (11) and Jordan Burgess (12). The duo of Lindsay Flood (12) and Kellie McSween (11) won 7-5, 6-1 against McMinnville’s Carly Szedlak (10) and Emme Angevine (9) as well. In the final doubles spot, Catherine Hu (11) and Meg Takara (11) lost a heartbreaker to Jillian Thomburg (10) and Gavrielle Walters (10) 4-6, 4-6.
