The Saxon women’s tennis team took on league favorite Forest Grove today. Short a few players, the Saxons switched up their singles and doubles lineups. The move proved advantageous as the Saxons topped the Vikings 5-3 on a windy afternoon at Bush Park.
On the singles side, senior Jillian Studer led the way, beating Esther Vega 6-1, 6-1 while freshman Abby Fedor added another win besting Jacqueline Frawley 6-2, 6-0. Senior Loryn Studer played her first career singles match, beating Emily Lester 6-2, 6-3. Also playing her first career singles match was junior Catherine Hu who just barely lost in a hard fought double tiebreaker 3-6, 7-6, 0-1.
The Saxon doubles teams nearly proved just as successful on the day. Undefeated duo Kate Paluska and Selbie Christensen took on district contenders Claire Buehler and Stevie Walker, losing 3-6, 3-6. Lindsay Flood and Kellie McSween pulled off an upset in their match, beating Vanessa Ramirez and Tania Garfias in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. The win meant the Saxons needed to pick up a win in the final two doubles pairings in order to record the overall team victory. Playing in their first match as partners, Amy Edelblute and Meg Takara battled hard, just barely falling short and losing to Riley Lindsay and Chelsea Pitaressi 6-4, 3-6, 3-6.
The loss left it up to freshmen Luciana Linares and Janie Lapray to bring home the victory. Playing in their first varsity match as partners, the two freshmen showed little signs of being rattled by the moment as they beat Elle Morgan and Karla Chavez to record the team victory over the Vikings.
Saxon JV players made good use of Bush Park’s court-lights as they played well into the 9:00 hour against Forest Grove’s 55 players.
The Saxons head to North Salem tomorrow to take on even more Vikings. Varsity matches start at 4:00PM.
