South Salem is 9-2 (11-5). North Salem is 4-8 (5-13).
For the second consecutive day, the South Salem Saxons defeated the North Salem Vikings, 11-1, in 5 innings.
After Cameron Kallhoff and Elijah Enomoto-Haole traded zeroes in the first, the Saxons jumped on the board with a run in the second. Ryan Brown led off with a double to the right-center gap. With Kaiden Doten at the plate, Brown stole third and scored when the catcher’s throw sailed into left field.
In the bottom of the second, Zach Goodwin led off with a hit by pitch, but was erased when Enomoto-Haole induced Joe Dixon to ground into a double play, one of three double plays the Saxons would turn Wednesday night. Another groundout ended the inning.
In the top of the third, the Saxons extended their lead to 2-0. Sean Alvarado singled with 2 outs and went on to steal second and third base with Tori Doten at the plate. Doten then hit a grounder to the 6-hole. Shortstop Will Tsukamaki made a diving play, but Doten beat it out for an infield RBI single.
Enomoto-Haole struck out two Vikings and earned a flyout to put up another zero in the third.
In the fourth, Brown led off with a walk. Gavin Fredinburg reached base on an error, advancing Brown to second. Kaiden Doten came to the plate and smashed a 1-0 fastball to center that got by a diving Zac Sullivan for an RBI double that also advanced Fredinburg to third. Enomoto-Haole followed with a grounder to third. The runners were going on down angle, so third baseman Jake Mason attempted to throw Fredinburg out at home, but the throw sailed high, allowing both runners to score, and advancing Enomoto-Haole to second on the play. A groundout, strikeout, and lineout ended the inning, but the Saxons led 6-0.
North Salem answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Tsukamaki walked and Kallhoff singled to lead things off, but Nick Raska grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, advancing Tsukamaki to third. After a Goodwin walk, Joe Dixon crushed a double to deep left field, scoring Tsukamaki easily, but Collin Vogt recovered the ball and fired to Tori Doten, who relayed home to Aaron Zavala to cut down Goodwin trying to score from first to end the inning.
With a 6-1 lead, the Saxons tacked on 5 runs in the fifth. Zavala singled with 1 out and moved up on a wild pitch. With a 3-0 count, North Salem chose to intentionally walk Brown. Fredinburg reached on a fielder’s choice grounder to Mason, who cut down Brown at second for the 2nd out of the inning. Kaiden Doten walked to load the bases, and Enomoto-Haole followed with a walk to bring in a run, and Vogt a hit by pitch to bring in another. After a pitching change, Alvarado was hit by a pitch to bring in another run and make it 9-1 in favor of the Saxons. Tori Doten brought home two more, making it 11-1, when he singled to center to score Wilson and Vogt. Zavala then stepped to the plate and belted what looked like a 3-run homerun that cleared the right field foul pole, but the home plate umpire called it foul and Zavala flew out on the next pitch.
Travis Burger led off the 5th with a walk, but was cut down on a 6-4-3 double play. Enomoto-Haole then struck out Hunter Sullivan to finish the inning, and seal the 10-run 5-inning victory for the Saxons.
Enomoto-Haole allowed just 2 hits en route to his 2nd win of the season.
South Salem will practice Thursday before hosting McNary at 5:00pm on Friday in the first of a 2-game set against the Celtics. Hope to see you there!
