The South Salem Women’s Tennis team wrapped up the regular season this week with wins against West Salem, McKay, and Sprague.
The week started on Monday afternoon as South hosted West Salem in a possible showcase of the Greater Valley Conference championships. Favored to win the singles bracket, Anya Gerasimova beat South’s Abby Fedor in straight sets, as did West Salem’s Miwa Goto over Maddy Hadden. From there, South picked up the following 6 matches as Sara Komoda and Amy Edelblute rounded out the Singles side and Jillian Studer/Chloe Elmore, Kate Paluska/Selbie Christensen, Lindsay Flood/Kellie McSween and Meg Takara/Catherine Hu picked up wins on the doubles side. The match final: 6-2 in South’s favor.
On Tuesday, South took on an experienced McKay team at STSC, topping the Royal Scots 8-0. The Saxons picked up the sweep on the doubles and singles side, receiving strong performances from all 12 of their varsity players. Catherine Hu, Amy Edelblute, Meg Takara, and Janie Lapray all won their matches on the Singles side. Jillian Studer/Chloe Elmore, Kate Paluska/Selbie Christensen, Lindsay Flood/Kellie McSween, and Sara Komoda/Madison Hadden all won their matches as doubles duos.
Finally, South’s last regular season match pitted them against a strong and experienced Sprague team. After thunder, lightening, and rain all caused delays to the match, the Saxons prevailed 6-2 overall. Freshman Abby Fedor showed she was ready to head into the GVC tournament as a possible seeded player, beating senior Sarah Teubner 6-3, 6-2. Sprague picked up the next two singles wins over South’s Amy Edelblute and Catherine Hu. Senior Abi Hernandez finished her Saxon career with a huge 4th singles win. South swept the doubles side, receiving wins from duos Jillian/Loryn Studer, Kate Paluska/Selbie Christensen, Lindsay Flood/Kellie McSween, and Chloe Elmore/Sara Komoda.
The Saxons ended the season 11-1 in GVC play and 11-2 overall. They head to the GVC tournament next Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Salem Tennis and Swim Club.
