Jamboree (3 inning mini-games)
Game one: Saxons 3, Silverton 0
Game two: Saxons 6, Dallas 0
In the first jamboree contest of the day, South Salem rode the arms of Sean Alvarado and Elijah Enomoto-Haole to pick up a 3-0 no-hit shutout of Silverton.
Of the six outs Alvarado recorded, five came via the strikeout. Enomoto-Haole added one strikeout in his inning of relief.
On the offensive side, South Salem scored 3 runs on 3 hits.
The first run came in the opening frame, when S. Alvarado drew a leadoff walk and subsequently worked his way all around the bases thanks to a stolen base and a couple of passed balls.
In the second inning, younger brother Danny Alvarado led off with a single to right. Enomoto-Haole followed with a single of his own, followed by Gavin Fredinburg getting drilled in the back with a fastball to load the bases. Brayden Neuharth drove in a run with a fielder’s choice, and Fredinburg scored on a passed ball five pitches later.
In the second contest of the game, the Saxons again relied on their arms, as Ryan Brown, Enomoto-Haole, and Aaron Zavala combined to throw a 2-hit shutout.
Brown struck out two in his lone inning of work. Enomoto-Haole added a strikeout in his second inning of relief on the day, and Zavala shut the door with a 12-pitch final frame that ended with a 1-6-3 double play.
Offensively, South Salem put up 6 runs on 6 hits.
After going down in order in the first inning, the Saxons got to work in the second. Nick Raska doubled over the center fielder’s head to lead off the frame. Following a strikeout, Greyson Hanowell walked. Then, after fouling off a 3-2 pitch, Noah Ferguson laced a double to left field to score Raska and move Hanowell to third. Kaiden Doten then roped a single to plate Hanowell and Ferguson to extend the lead to 3-0.
Collin Vogt kept the hit-train rolling, as he singled to left. Following a Sean Alvarado groundout to move the runners over, Aaron Zavala brought home Doten and Vogt on a double down the left field line, advancing the lead to 5-0.
The Saxons added an insurance run in the final frame. Following a 1-out Neuharth walk, Hanowell was hit by a pitch. Ferguson picked up his second RBI of the game three pitches later, when he lined a 2-0 fastball to right to score Neuharth and give South Salem a 6-0 lead.
South Salem finished the day with a total of 9 runs on 9 hits, 3 walks, and 3 stolen bases while allowing 0 runs on 2 hits, 3 walks, and 1 stolen base. The Saxons also struck out 9 opposing hitters.
While the games don’t technically count for anything, and the statistics disappear into the ether, it was a solid confidence-boosting day for the Saxons.
