Boys Varsity Baseball · BASE: May shuts out Sprague; South to semifinals

Tristan May spun a complete game shutout to lead the Saxons to a 9-0 victory over Sprague at a jam-packed Gilmore Field in the quarterfinals on Friday. With the win, South Salem advances to the semifinals and will travel to face Clackamas on Tuesday.

South Salem is now 24-6 (13-3). The 2018 squad is now tied with the 1974 and 1991 South Salem teams for most wins in a single season in school history.

Sprague finishes 19-10 (11-5).

May struck out Alek Altringer to start the day. Michael Soper followed with a single to center, but May induced Cole Herschbach to hit a grounder to Ryan Brown, who flipped to Gavin Fredinburg to start a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame.

Meanwhile, Spencer Plant got the start for the Olympians. He sent the Saxons down in order in the bottom of the first, and it looked like a pitchers’ duel was in the works.

Sprague threatened in the top of the second, when a 2-out walk and subsequent error put two runners on board. Zach Lovell then hit a popup in no-man’s land in short left-center field, but Brown made a stellar play – catching the ball on the run with his back to home plate. South likewise threatened in the bottom of the second after Danny Alvarado singled and Gavin Fredinburg walked two outs later. But a strikeout ended the second with the score at 0-0.

After sending the Olympians down in order in the top of the third, South’s bats got rolling in the bottom half. Noah Ferguson laced a single down the left field to lead off the inning and advanced to third when Sean Alvarado singled to right. On the next pitch, Aaron Zavala brought Ferguson home with a single to center, giving South the first run of the game. Alvarado and Zavala then pulled off a double steal before Ryan Brown singled them both home with a line drive to right-center, extending the Saxon lead to 3-0.

Sprague went down in order again in the top of the fourth. In the bottom half, South added two more when Ferguson and Sean Alvarado scored on a Zavala single to right, making it 5-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Danny Alvarado led off by getting hit by a pitch. Kaiden Doten followed with a walk. After a strikeout, Gavin Fredinburg doubled down the left field line to bring home Alvarado and advanced Doten to third. Vogt followed by bringing Doten home on a sacrifice fly to left-center, and South held a 7-0 advantage.

The Saxons went on to add two more runs in the 6th when Sean Alvarado and Zavala, who reached base on a single and double, respectively, both scored when Doten’s swinging bunt led to an error.

In the 7th, Sprague got a couple of runners on via a walk and a single, but May shut the door on Sprague’s 2018 season by inducing an Altringer flyout to right.

It was May’s second win of the season, and his first complete game. It was also the first and only time that Sprague’s offense was shutout all year.

Zavala led the charge on offense, going 3-4 with 3 RBI to give him 48 RBI on the 2018 campaign. South also stole three bags to give them an even 100 stolen bases in 111 attempts (90.1%) through 30 games.

Other scores from the quarterfinals:

  • West Salem 3, West Albany 2
  • Westview 5, West Linn 3
  • Clackamas 4, Central Catholic 2
