The South Salem Girls Tennis Team opened league play Tuesday night with a 6-2 victory over Sprague.
On the singles side, junior Abby Fedor moved to 3-1 on the season, beating last year’s State qualifier Eva Hammond 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Esha Puri tallied another win as well, beating Alexis Murphy 6-3, 6-0. Mariana Rey Rosa continued her undefeated season, topping Olivia Decker 6-0, 6-0 and exchange student Suzie Kawano earned her first win, sealed the singles sweep and the overall team win by beating Layla Koulibali 6-1, 6-1.
The Saxons went 2-2 on the doubles side, earning wins at the 1 and 3 doubles slots. Junior Janie Lapray and freshman Erin Cridge beat their Oly opponents 7-6, 6-3 to earn the first doubles win of the day. First time partners Hannah Leichty (11) and Lucy Partridge (12) lost a tough match at 2-doubles 3-6, 1-6. At 3-doubles, Luciana Linares (11) and Emma Hurley (11) notched their first win as partners, ousting their opponents 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the sole 3-set match of the day. And at 4 doubles, seniors Amy Edelblute and Maddy Hadden put up a strong fight, ultimately losing a close one 3-6, 6-7.
The win today moved the Saxons to 3-1 overall on the season. South’s lone loss came against a tough Sheldon team prior to Spring Break with their wins coming against Benson and Forest Grove. South hosts West Salem at Salem Tennis and Swim Club on Thursday in a battle of the unbeatens in the league.
