In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader in Bend, South Salem’s offense led the Saxons to a 15-2 victory over Summit.
South Salem: 010 108 5… 15 16 0
Summit: 010 000 1… 2 4 3
Due to Summit’s field being underwater, the games were moved to Mountain View High School.
Both teams traded zeroes in the first inning before the Saxons jumped on the board with a run in the top of the second. With 1 out, Greyson Hanowell doubled off the wall in center field and scored on Noah Ferguson’s single to center.
But Summit answered quickly in the bottom half to tie it up. With 2 outs, Gus Martin walked and then scored on a double to right center field. Ferguson struck out Andrew Ryan to end the inning.
In the top of the 4th, South Salem took the lead for the final time. Kaiden Doten led off with a double to right. 1 out later, he stole third, but the catcher’s throw was off-line and the third baseman couldn’t handle it, which allowed Doten to score to give the Saxons the 2-1 advantage.
Two innings later, the Saxons opened the floodgates. Danny Alvarado got the ball rolling by hitting a 3-0 fastball over the left field fence for his 4th homerun of the 2019 campaign. Doten then singled and stole second before moving up to third on a Hanowell lineout to deep right center field. Ferguson drove Doten home with a single of his own. Elijah Enomoto-Haole and Gabe Johnson followed with walks to load the bases. Brayden Neuharth then brought home two runs with a double, extending the lead to 6-1. Sean Alvarado walked to load the bases again. That’s when Summit opted to change pitchers, bringing Julian Mora in from the pen to face Ryan Brown, who promptly hit the first pitch Mora threw over the wall in left center field for a grand slam. It was Brown’s first homer of the 2019 season and gave South a 10-1 lead.
The Saxons went on to add 5 more runs in the 7th inning.
Meanwhile, Noah Ferguson threw his third consecutive complete game victory (not including the suspended Grant game, in which Ferguson was still on the mound heading into the 7th inning of a tie game, which will be resumed May 14). Ferguson is now 3-0 with a 1.11 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 31.1 innings on the mound.
