The South Salem Girls Tennis team hosted the first annual Saxon Invite Friday at Salem Tennis and Swim Club. West Albany, Forest Grove, and Wilsonville all joined the Saxons in the event.
Playing in the singles bracket for the Saxons were Abby Fedor, Mariana Rey Rosa, Suzie Kawano, and Hannah Leichty. Fedor, Rey Rosa, and Kawano all won their 1st round matches, with Leichty dropping a tough one to the overall 3 seed, Lester from Forest Grove. Leichty entered the consolation bracket and won her next three matches on her way to becoming the consolation champion. Rey Rosa and Kawano faced number 1 seed and the number 4 seed overall respectively in their 2nd round matches. Both played strong matches, ultimately losing to their opponents. Fedor, the 2 seed overall, won three straight matches to get into the championship match where she faced 3-time GVC champion Ceanne Elliott. Fedor led Elliot most of the match but Elliott prevailed as singles champion.
On the doubles side, the Saxons were led by number 1 overall seed Janie Lapray and Erin Cridge. Joining them in the bracket were Emma Hurley and Luciana Linares, Amy Edelbute and Maddy Hadden, and Quincy Winder and Lydia Prestwich. The latter duo faced the 2 seed from Forest Grove in their first match. After the loss, Winder and Prestwich dropped into the doubles consolation where they lost a close one to their West Albany opponents. The other three Saxon teams all stayed alive into the semi-finals, where Hurley and Linares faced Hadden and Edelblute. Hadden/Edelblute jumped out to a big league early when Hurley and Linares came back to win, earning a spot in the tournament finale against Lapray and Cridge who beat their West Albany opponents in the semis. In the final, Hurley and Linares took an early lead before Lapray and Cridge took over the match, eventually being crowned champion.
The Saxon’s individual success boosted their team scores in the tournament, where they earned 47 total points to Forest Grove’s 14, Wilsonville’s 18, and West Albany’s 28.
South enters a full week of head to head match play, hosting McNary and West Albany on Monday and Tuesday, traveling to Bend to face Mt. View on Thursday, and then return to host Tualatin on Friday.
