Boys Varsity Baseball · BASE: Saxons 9, Mountain View 8

In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, the Saxons battled back from an early deficit to pick up a 9-8 victory to keep their league title hopes alive.

Mountain View: 007 000 1 … 8 6 3
South Salem: 200 430 x … 9 9 2

With the win, the Saxons improved to 17-4 (9-2). The Cougars of Mountain View fell to 6-14 (1-9).

Mountain View looked poised to break the game open in the top of the first inning, when Luke Klein doubled to lead off the game. BB Logan was then hit by a pitch before Ryan Martini walked to load the bases. But South Salem starter Ryan Brown settled down to strike out the next three hitters to get out of the jam.

In the bottom of the first, the Saxons scored a couple of runs to take an early 2-0 lead. Sean Alvarado was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a Brown double. After a popout, Kaiden Doten hit an infield single, but Alvarado and Brown had to hold up, which left the bases loaded for Greyson Hanowell, who drew a walk to score Alvarado. Elijah Enomoto-Haole followed with a sacrifice fly to score Brown.

After trading zeroes in the second, the Cougars’ offense exploded for 7 runs in the third inning on 5 hits, 2 walks, and an error.

The Saxons were unable to score in the bottom of the third before turning the ball over to Ricky Alvarado on the mound in the 4th. Ricky went on to pitch 3 innings, allowing just 1 run. Thanks to his performance on the mound, the Saxon offense had the chance to make its comeback.

In the bottom of the fourth, Noah Ferguson led off by getting hit by a pitch. One out and a stolen base later, Brown doubled to bring home Ferguson. Danny Alvarado followed with an RBI single, cutting the lead to 7-4. Kaiden Doten then walked before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. A Hanowell groundout scored Alvarado before a wild pitch plated Doten.

Trailing 7-6, South Salem took the lead for the final time in the bottom of the 5th. With 1 out, Ferguson hit into what looked like a groundout, but the first baseman couldn’t handle the throw, allowing Noah to reach base safely. It was costly, though, as Ferguson injured his hip and had to exit the game (his injury also prevented him from playing in the second game of the day, a game he was slated to start on the mound). Chandler Walker pinch-ran and advanced to second on Sean Alvarado’s ensuing single. Brown followed with a single of his own to load the bases. The Mountain View pitcher then attempted a backpick to first base, but the ball sailed into the berm, allowing Walker to score to tie the game at 7-7. That’s when Doten singled to left to score Alvarado and Brown, giving the Saxons the 9-7 lead.

In the top of the 7th, Mountain View drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. South Salem then turned to Elijah Enomoto-Haole to finish the game. He promptly struck out the first two batters he faced. The third hitter, BB Logan, followed by striking out on a pitch in the dirt, but the throw to first was off line, which allowed Mountain View to load the bases. A walk made it 9-8, but Enomoto-Haole earned the save when he got Tanner Wild to hit a grounder to Hanowell at third, who stepped on the bag to end the game.
