South Salem High School earned the Mountain Valley Conference title with an 8-5 game two victory over Mountain View on Friday, the team’s first league championship since 2012.
Mountain View: 001 004 0 … 5 10 2
South Salem: 202 211 x … 8 10 2
South Salem is now 18-4, and finishes league play with a 10-2 record. Mountain View is now 6-15 (1-10).
After earning a save to close out the first game of the day, Elijah Enomoto-Haole was called upon to start game two after scheduled starter Noah Ferguson suffered a leg injury earlier in the afternoon. He would throw 4 innings in game two, allowing just 1 run on 5 scattered hits, to earn his second win of the 2019 campaign.
South’s offense got off to a quick start again in the second game, scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning when Sean Alvarado and Ryan Brown hit back-to-back doubles before Danny Alvarado singled to left.
The Saxons added 2 runs in the third on a hit, a walk, and a 2-base error, before they scored 2 more runs in the fourth. Brayden Neuharth led off the inning with a triple to left. One out later, Brett Matthews walked. Sean Alvarado followed with a single to plate Neuharth. Brown followed with an infield single, but an errant throw allowed Alvarado to score, making it 6-1 in favor of South Salem.
In the 5th, the Saxons sent Tyler Minney to the mound for his third career varsity appearance. Having just 25 pitches to work with thanks to Oregon’s pitch count rules, he got through the 5th without allowing a run, despite a walk and an error.
South Salem scored a single run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth.
Minney got two quick outs to start the 6th inning, but he had to exit when his 25th pitch was fouled off for a 1-2 count against Mountain View’s Luke Klein. Brett Matthews took over on the mound. After Klein worked a 3-2 count, the 12th pitch of his at-bat was a ball for a 2-out walk. After an error extended the inning, the Cougars reeled off 4 consecutive singles to score 4 runs, cutting the lead to 7-5, before Matthews struck out Owen Aylward to end the threat.
The Saxons added a run in the bottom half of the inning when Danny Alvarado crushed a deep solo shot to left field with 2 outs. Doten followed by getting hit by a pitch, but a groundout ended the inning.
Matthews went back out in the 7th. After surrendering a leadoff single, he got Nolan Edgerton to ground into a 4-6-3 double play. The next batter, pinch-hitter Jordan Conroyd, grounded out to Doten at first to end the game and seal the conference championship for the Saxons.
Ryan Brown finished the day with 5 hits, including 3 doubles, 2 RBI, and 4 runs. Danny Alvarado finished with 4 hits, including the homerun, his 8th of the season. Sean Alvarado also had 4 hits.
Enomoto-Haole ended the day with a win and a save in 5 innings of work, striking out 7.
The Saxons next travel to Grant on Tuesday to resume their game from early April. Upon completion of the resumed game, Grant and South Salem will play a second game. Then, on Thursday, Aloha will come to Gilmore Field for South Salem’s senior night. The Saxons’ first round playoff game will be Monday, May 20, against a team to determined later.
