Meet Recap

Our team faced a very experienced and talented team in West Albany on Thursday. While the final score wasn’t as we had all hoped, we had a lot of bright spots in each match and saw a lot of growth from our athletes. In fact, it was the first time all of our doubles teams had played together before, the first time our singles had played in their positions, and the first varsity match for many of the ladies as well, including freshman Mariana Rey-Rosa, sophomore Kelli McSween, junior Lindsay Flood, and seniors Karli Scoggins and Alison Brown. Alison Brown picked up her first varsity win and our only win of the day as well. Junior Olivia Webster pushed her opponent to the brink though, narrowly losing 7-5, 7-5. We hope to capitalize on our growth in our next match against McNary, at home on Monday the 28th. See you there!

Game Recap

For the championship we played Tigard, another game that was all about defense between the two great teams. South plays a tough man to man defense where Tigard has a tough 2-3 Zone defense which is very active. This was a very physical, grinding type of game. It was very low scoring because both defenses were very good and going into the game we knew it would be. Going into half we were down 22-21. Again we talked about what got us here, which is defense and intensity. But we needed to generate some offense and we found it in Dani Harley, who had five 3’s in the game and finished with 18 points. One of our post players, Simone Leaks, went down with a knee injury so Alexia Hicks was called on to play She had a tough person to guard who was 6’3″ post player senior Elise Conroy. But Alexia was up for the challenge and really did well in spite of giving up 5 inches. She really used her strength to keep her at bay and we doubled teamed her a lot to get the ball out of here hands, which gave us the edge going into the fourth quarter. Evina Westbrook really attacked the basket and got to the Foul line or as well call it the charity stripe. Evina went 7 for 8, hitting some huge pressure free throws and Dani hit one of her five 3’s towards the end of the game that sealed the victory for South. We are now Back to Back 6A State Champions. This is an amazing accomplishment and a testament to these wonderful young ladies that we have on this team. I wanted to say the sacrifice the grind, adversity, the long hours and the six days a week practices and playing against the boys really paid off. It’s always nice to see the reward at the end of all that and to the coaching staff. I want to say as a coach that I am very proud and humbled that I was able to make this journey and write all these articles. It was a true pleasure! GO SAXONS!!! Maybe a 3 Peat???

Dani Harley led all scorers with 18 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist. Evina Westbrook added 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Jordan Woodvine had 7 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. Tori Swanson contributed 5 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Next, Simone Leaks had 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist. Alexia Hicks had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.

Game Recap

In the semi-finals, we played Jesuit and what a game! It was a back and forth game, with each team making their own runs on offense and defense. It was a battle between the top teams in the state and we went to halftime down three, 25-22. We talked about intensity and stepping up our defense and applying more pressure, like they were doing to us. We also needed senior Jordan Woodvine to step up and Evina Westbrook and did they deliver. Evina really attacked the basket in the second half and Jordan hit some shots which then freed up Dani Harley to hit some huge 3’s to take the lead. We took the lead at the start of the 4th quarter we never let it go . South also made their free throws down the stretch to pull away from Jesuit. Now off to the finals where we face the 2-3 Zone of Tigard and their big post. We are one step closer to being back to back champions. Evina Westbrook tallied 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Jordan Woodvine had 16 points 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Next, Dani Harley produced 12 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist. Simone Leaks also contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds. Tori Swanson added 5 points three assists, and 2 steals. Alexia Hicks had 6 points and 4 rebounds.

Game Recap

We played Oregon City in the first round at the Chiles Center and OC gave us our first Loss and only loss of the season. So this game was about redemption. We thought that we beat ourselves the first game. So we came up with a game plan and we knew if we could hold them under 50 points we had a really good chance to win this game. So practice all week was about defense. OC averages 70.6 points a game, so defense was the key. The Lady Saxons executed to perfection and it was the best defense I have ever seen them play. We held OC to just 12 points for the whole first half, which I believe has never been done. At halftime it was about not letting up and keeping up the pressure. Once again, the Saxons delivered to perfection as we prevailed 46-30. It was simply amazing! Next up in the semi finals is Jesuit, a very good team. We are one step closer to becoming back to back 6A state champs! Stats: Evina Westbrook lead all scorers with 24 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Jordan Woodvine had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Tori Swanson contributed 3 points and 9 rebounds. Next, Dani Harley had 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Simone Leaks had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
