“FRESHMAN PHENOM STRIKES AGAIN!”

That’s correct; on the day before he was honored by the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club as Athlete of the Week, freshman winger David Garcia Campos came through with late game winning heroics—handing victory to the Saxons—and once again, earning him man of the match honors. Here’s how it went down…

NORTH SALEM HS: About 30 minutes in, the Saxons were awarded a PK when junior winger Jafet Ruelas was taken down in the box. But once again, the Saxons were denied by a brilliant keeper save. Four minutes later, the Vikings were in front on a nice goal off a direct free kick. It was nil-one at the half. Twelve minutes into the second half, the Saxons were awarded another PK, when junior midfielder Alexis Luna was taken down in the box. Finally given his chance from the spot, Senior midfielder Fernando Hidalgo was not to be denied. He stepped up and made no mistake, bringing the teams even on the scoreboard. Then, in the 70th minute, with ten minutes remaining, Alexis fed the ball to “FrPh” David GC who shot up and over the keeper and into the far corner of the net from about 20 yards out.

We were a little bit lucky – and they were a little bit unlucky – with the two PK calls, although they were both clearly justified. It was not our best game of the year; we did not start or play particularly well. But it was a rivalry game—it was emotional and intense—and all things considered, we survived.

Man of the match honors go to David GC and Fernando.
