The Saxon pitching and defense had a rough day on Friday. That explains how Corvallis got only one hit over seven innings but came away with the 8-5 win.
The Spartans jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first without the benefit of a hit. In the fourth they added two more runs, again, without garnering a hit. Not until the fifth inning did the Spartans get an RBI as the result of an infield hit.
The Saxons did battle back with one run in the second, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth. They lost their best chance to get even, however, when in the sixth inning with runners on first and second and only one out Corvallis pitcher Holland Jenson ended any Saxon rally with consecutive called third strike outs.
The Saxons were led offensively by Rowan Thompson who had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Alivia Benavidez had South’s only extra base hit with a double to right center in the fifth that drove in a run.
Next game for the Saxons is on the road this Monday versus Lebanon. 5:00 p.m. start.
